Health Literacy Fundamentals for Nurses - Online Course


Accreditation:  Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing (Sigma) is accredited as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Using the nursing process as a framework, this course will focus on helping participants use health literacy standards to assess health literacy levels, diagnose or recognize clients with low and extremely low health literacy, plan and implement appropriate patient education techniques, and evaluate patient teaching.

Course Outcomes

  • Describe common barriers to adequate health literacy and consequences of low health literacy.
  • Recognize signs of low and extremely low health literacy.
  • Demonstrate health literacy universal precautions when educating patients in your own practice.
  • Evaluate patients’ understanding of health education.

About the Author

Karen R. Hernes, MSN, RN, CNE, is an assistant professor of nursing at Purdue University Northwest. She has experience in educational didactic, clinical, and simulation settings. She has worked in medical-surgical acute care settings, ambulatory care, as well as faith community settings and brings excellent interpersonal communication and nursing skills into educational, healthcare, and community settings to provide outstanding educational opportunities.

Ms. Hernes has presented numerous times on the topic of health literacy. She received her MSN from Valparaiso University and her BSN from Johns Hopkins University.
