Implementing a Nurse Faculty-Led Medical Mission - Online Course


Accreditation:  Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing (Sigma) is accredited as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

This course will prepare nursing faculty to lead a medical mission with nursing students that includes the clinical care of patients in the international setting. The course content will address the planning, cultural adaptation, budgetary, and supply needs for carrying out the medical mission, as well as addressing the health, safety, and handling of illnesses and emergencies among the faculty and students. Lastly, post-mission be-briefing will be discussed.

After completing this course in the program, learners will be able to:

  • Describe the pre-planning needed to implement a successful medical mission.
  • Develop a budget for all components of the medical mission.
  • Understand the cultural aspects that impact a medical mission overseas.
  • Develop and implement a plan for health and safety of the mission team.
  • Conduct a debrief and evaluation of the medical mission.

About the Author:

Constance Visovsky, PHD, RN, ANCP, FAAN is a nurse scientist, educator, and acute care nurse practitioner with approximately 10 years experience in planning and executing global educational and medical missions in poorly-resourced and rural areas of the U.S., Asia, and Latin America.

Denise Maguire, PhD, RN, CNL, FAAN is the Vice Dean of the Graduate Programs and tenured Associate Professor in the College of Nursing, University of South Florida in Tampa. She spent the majority of her clinical nursing career as a neonatal ICU nurse and nurse manager, practicing in New York, Boston, and Saint Petersburg, Florida. As a faculty member, she has led student trips to Panama as the course lead for community and population health.
