Professional Identity in Nursing: Background and Introduction - Online Course

Professional Identity in Nursing is a “sense of oneself, and in relationship with others, that is influenced by characteristics, norms, and values of the nursing discipline, resulting in an individual thinking, acting, and feeling like a nurse.” This session will discuss the development an action plan for naming and shaping professional identity formation in nursing practice, education and policy that includes competencies, essential elements, and exemplars to foster professional identity formation in nursing based on the best available evidence.

• Discuss the definition and domains of Professional Identity in Nursing.
• Explain the benefits of illuminating and fostering Professional Identity in Nursing.
• Summarize key findings from the existing body of scientific knowledge on Professional Identity in Nursing.

About the Authors:

Kristen Priddy, PhD, RN, CNS has been a nurse for 30 years with a clinical background in Labor and Delivery nursing. She has taught undergraduate nursing students for 23 years. Dr. Priddy has conducted grounded theory research on formation of professional identity and serves on the advisory council of the International Society for Professional Identity in Nursing. Her mission is to understand, touch, and improve nursing education in the U.S. and around the world.

KaryAnne Weybrew, MSN, RN is an experienced Program Administrator, healthcare provider, and leader with a demonstrated history of successful outcomes working in the higher education industry. Skilled in Nursing Management, Nursing Education, Women’s Health, Critical Care, and Healthcare. Team-orientated, ethical, healthcare services professional with a Masters of Science focused in Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner & studies in Nursing Education from University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Nursing, passionate about transformation the future of nursing.

Julie Read, DNP, MS, RN, NE-C Senior Director of Nursing Practice & Transformational Leadership for Kaiser Permanente, is known for her passion around creating nursing excellence to ensure quality patient outcomes. Julie received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing from the University of Rochester and a Doctorate in Nursing Practice from the University of San Francisco. Julie has held leadership positions in nursing, quality and patient safety. She currently provides leadership for enterprise-wide strategic initiatives in nursing practice.
